From Material Innovation to Furniture Design: A New Step Forward for MUNIE

MUNIE continues to take an important step forward in expanding the potential of water hyacinth textiles into home and furniture applications.

With support from the Creative Economy Agency (CEA), this project provided funding for prototype development, material research, and performance testing of MUNIE’s handwoven water hyacinth textile. The results demonstrated the material’s strength and its potential for use in furniture applications, opening new possibilities beyond traditional textile products.

As part of the project, MUNIE also developed new weaving techniques and original textile patterns, combining craftsmanship with material innovation. Selected weaving designs have been officially registered for design protection, reinforcing MUNIE’s commitment to developing its own creative and intellectual property.

The project was developed in collaboration with leading Thai designers, bringing together material research, craftsmanship, and contemporary furniture design. This collaboration has helped MUNIE strengthen its capabilities in furniture development while exploring new ways to translate water hyacinth into functional and meaningful design.

More importantly, the project marks a significant evolution for MUNIE — from creating sustainable lifestyle products to developing innovative materials for furniture and interior applications.

It represents another important milestone in MUNIE’s journey to transform water hyacinth from an environmental challenge into a valuable design material, while expanding the brand toward new markets, new collaborations, and new possibilities for sustainable living.
